Global polling on public attitudes to the energy transition

Secure Energy Project polling finds 69% of people globally want energy transition

SEP - together with award-winning polling agency Opinium - has conducted a public survey across 12 countries and found a large majority of people across all countries polled - 69% - are in favour of a renewable energy transition.

Our survey was conducted across 12 countries - South Africa, Nigeria, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, US, UK, Canada, Mexico, France and Germany with members of the public. We gathered demographic information, an understanding of their values and the issues that were most important to respondents, their concerns around climate change and attitudes towards energy transition. We also tested their responses to narratives around renewable energy, popularity of possible government policies that would progress energy transition, voting behaviour and where respondents source their news and media.

The good news is that people are overwhelmingly in favour of energy transition and many care strongly about climate change - 82% are concerned, with 25% of people globally putting it in their top 3 concerns. But the cost of living is biting everywhere - and our polling showed public concerns about the cost of both implementing and running renewables, as well as some concerns about reliability and environmental impact.

Our research found people are very positive about renewables that will have personal benefits for them, such as: personal cost savings, clean air, energy reliability and security, access to energy for those that do not yet have it, and potential for people and nature to be in better health than they are today.

We need to focus on what public audiences most care about and build narratives that express the ways in which they will benefit from renewables, and experience their economic, social and environmental benefits. The Secure Energy Project has developed sample narratives and a data-backed messaging guide that can be used as part of public communications campaigns, also available as a separate resource on our website.
